Steve Hadaway

Steve is a math teacher at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. He has a Master’s of Arts degree in Mathematic Education from DePaul University in Chicago, IL and a Bachelor’s of Science in sociology from Excelsior College in Albany, New York. In addition to teaching math, Steve presents Character Education lessons to the students and faculty at Riverside. He has also taught adult education in literacy and math skills for the College of Lake County in Lake County, Illinois.

Prior to his career as a teacher, Steve was in the United States Navy for 23 years. He was an instructor at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center and evaluated and supervised other instructors during this assignment. Steve also served as a pastor in a small church in Alabama for one year. He retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer after serving in the Naval Nuclear Power program and as a Navy Deep Sea Diver. His final duty station was at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. During this assignment, Steve became aware that many recruits were being discharged from the Navy prior to completion of “boot camp” for failure to adapt to the military lifestyle. Working with the command chaplain, Steve created a program that taught these recruits how to adapt to the discipline and rigors of the military. This program included character education, self-awareness, anger control, working within a racially diverse setting, and other social skills that helped these young people become productive members of the Navy. This program is still in use today in recruit training and has helped many young men and women progress towards successful careers. It was during the creation and operation of this program that Steve realized that his passion and calling lives in helping young men and women reach their full potential. As an educator, he sees the impact, both positive and negative, that teachers can have on their students. He is excited about helping others learn how to use the lessons and information provided by the Gurian Institute.
